Sam Hui's rewrite of "Midnight in Moscow" ( probably itself derived from a version of folk song Eire Canal ) into Cantonese song " Unite Students"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LmNfCAshRs&feature=related

Here is Sam Hui in a concert in the 1990s singing "Sealed With a Kiss" in English and one of his own CantoPop songs ( Lyrics found here: http://mojim.com/twy101187x36x20.htm  ) ::  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiSPzz5I6QM&feature=related

Above song " Unite Students ' ( more accurately know as " Student Brothers " ) has the following lyrics in this cover by 2 UK students :

許冠杰 (Sam Hui) - 學生哥 cover by 學生
學海無崖 藝無止境 唯勤是岸
(知之為知之,不知為不知)

Link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I72ADhrIb7E&feature=watch_response

歌手:許冠傑
作曲: Goldstein

人多多,RE ME RE DO 齊合力喝伴同和。
(人多多,RE ME RE DO 齊合力喝伴同和)

All native Cantonese speakers think that the Cantonese pronunciation  in 等玉人 by The Charlie Santos Group is hilarious  ( and then say to me that " his Cantonese is even worse than yours Tom " ).   I think it is a good try for a Brazilian band.

I went to one of my local Cantonese Style Cafes today and people started talking in mixed English and Cantonese about how hard it is for non Cantonese to understand Cantonese.  So I say " I can't even understand the titles of some of your Cantonese songs.  For example, Sam Hui's song  等玉人.  My wife tells me it  means in Cantonese "Waiting woman" but when I try to translate the lyrics, it seems to me to be about a guy who is contemplating the problems of waiting for a dream girlfriend.  3 or 4 tables burst forth in a jabber ( to me ) of Cantonese about the song and its title.  It was decided that my wife really meant "Waiting for a Woman" but this is not quite right and after some more discusion it was decided that the name is really either "Waiting for a Dream Girlfriend" or "Waiting for a Perfect Girlfriend".  Maybe in a few weeks I will know the whole Cantonese song by asking a different question about a phrase of the song that I do not understand on each visit.

This revelation that 玉人 means Dream or Perfect / girl or girlfriend means that the Cantonese rewrite of

" I Saw her Standing There "  should mean "Obsessed with a Dream Girl "  in Cantonese, which makes much more sense to all those of us who have known the song for the last 50 years.

There is an index of Sam Hui songs on one of his web sites with lyrics in either English or Chinese characters depending on what language the song was recorded in at the time.  ( "From the Heart of a Drifter" is in both languages because he has sung it in both English and Cantonese.  There may be a Mandarin versionof this song.  There is at least one Teresa Teng version also. )  The link to the site is:   http://www.samhuiwun.com/song/songindex.php
