There is an ebook for young Mandarin learners called "Water is Blue" by Weylan Tiankong ( Huge Blue Sky ? ) with many examples of using se and de with colors.  I do not fully understand every sentence in the book yet since a main focus is the inclusion and the non inclusion of se and de depending on the sentence structure.  For example:

  The water is blue.

  Shuǐ shì lán sè de.

  Trees are green and brown.

Shù shì lǜsè hé zōngsè de.

Although Google Translate comes up with ( no de at the end, maybe another GT error ?):

  Shù shì lǜsè hé zōngsè.

and another example:

Our sky is blue with white clouds.

Wǒmen de tiānkōng shì lán sè de yǒu bái de yún.

and a final example ( many more in the ebook )

Our earth is round, with blue water, brown soil, green grass and trees.

Wǒmen de dìqiú shì yuán de, yǒu lán shuǐ, zōng tǔ, lǜ cǎo hé shùmù.

If you type as input to the WCC dictionary, you generate many "purple" (    )  words:

When you type  紫色  as input to the WCC dictionary, you get only two "purple / violet (color) " (   ) words
