Call me slow, but I have recently discovered the Weibo 微博 phenomenon that is happening in China. Notably QQ Weibo (tencent) and Sina Weibo are amazingly feature rich communication tools that make twitter seem like a small fry.

Anyway my question is whether or not anybody here is making use of such tools to supplement their Chinese learning? (as the interface is solely in Chinese). I'm thinking it might be a great tool, since it is a real challenge to even navigate around the interface. Thoughts?

If you are looking to start, here are instructions on how to open a Sina Weibo account.

I just saw that Mo left a comment here and I wanted to add that I just happened to start adding words from the Weibo interface to my Skritter list so I could navigate it better.  I think it's a great way to learn Chinese, but I have to say that I also think that you've got to put some time into learning the words on the interface.  It's amazing how many times I've looked up simple things like 首页 - hence my list.  It just makes it much more enjoyable when you learn the words up front so that you can spend your time using the site instead of figuring out how it works.

Yeah I think it would really help.Weibo has the most current Chinese phrases.Try to comment on some of the weibo they sent or @(mention) some interesting people. They will chat with you too. That's good exercises I believe.

I use 新浪微博 almost every day. I follow some of my favorite Chinese celebrities, TV Shows, companies etc. and then found accounts that are focused on my interests... mainly bike riding and teaching Chinese. It might be a little overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of the basics it is fun to see how much you can understand. And of course, if you have some Chinese friends, you can always ask them to leave corrected comments after you 发一件微博 (send a micro-message).
