”所“ = “的”? Can anyone post a link to a good video or website that helps explain 所?

I just came across 所 as a noun and pronoun and even verb modifier, and it's really confusing. Can some native speakers post some explanations or links to a page that can help? Thanks!

厕所 ( Cèsuǒ ) is toilet.

as noun, it's a low rank government institution, after you come to BJ, you will deal alot with 派出所, the police station.

it's not a verb modifier, because it's not describing how you do, it draws what you do / did/have done/will do.

and i dont agree to call it pronoun, because it cannot be used on its own. i would like to call it a highlighter, it followed with verb and verb phrase.

我喜欢这本书,我喜欢的是作者传达出来的态度和他表现出来的智慧。

what i like      that he delivered   that he menifested

要做的就是了解市场。 what you need to do

The WCC Dictionary has a coverage of  's many meanings.  The main definition is

actually / place / classifier for houses, small buildings, institutions etc / that which / particle introducing a relative clause or passive

Type  into WCC input window.  You will get definition of    alone and many combinations.  Make sure you click on "more" at bottom ( there are 3 "more" pages with      .

The main meaing of  所    when used as a noun is "place, spot, location; position; building; office.  That is why a toilet is called a "Chee sou" in both Mandarin and Cantonese eateries and function buildings.

The use of    as a particle is explained here:

One of the examples in the   chinese grammar info   article on   suo-structural-particle    is :

  这种所谓的翻译非常不好。
Zhè zhǒng suǒwèi de fānyì fēicháng bù hǎo.
  This so-called “translation” is terrible.

I have heard that said about my Mandarin translations more than a few times.

Even way more times about my Cantonese translations.

@Thomas - Thats for the website, this is exactly what I was looking for!

Quick question tho, "有所得也可能有所失“, does this mean "What comes around goes around"?

Yes it basically means that or "What one gains also one may lose."

Here is the link of explanations of "所"

http://www.zdic.net/z/1a/xs/6240.htm

I will show you my personal understanding.

In addition to a quantifier, the "所" are recognized in a subordinate relationship.

e.g.

研究所,住所,哨所,厕所。

These words are omitted the structures with barrier sight for the these actions.

有所得也可能有所失。

This sentence omitted a subject, "得" and "失" both states belone to the subject.

谢谢你。这是我写的一些造句,有人可以告诉我如果我掌握了没?谢谢!

1. 我所做的事情都是为你的好。

Everything I do is for your own good.

2. 我所发表的文章跟人群很受欢迎了。

The article I wrote was very popular with the people.

3. 从我所认识过的人,我都没有认识到像你这样的一个人。

I have never met a person like you.

4. 我所得成功的百分之八十就是因为我的坚持。

80% of my success can be attributed to perseverance.

Compounds

所想 1. 又不是你所想的。 It's not what you think.

          2. 我知道你所想的, 不过。。。I know what your thinking, but.... ( Chinglish? lol)

这是我的一些造句

The two predicate in the sentence is grammatically wrong.

这是我写的一些用'所'字造的句。 "的" next "造" make the "造" be an attribute of "句"。

Or

这是我造的一些句。

有人可以告诉我如果我掌握了没?

I will read this sentence as "有人可以告诉我(我)掌握了没?". The 2nd "我" can be omitted by context.

1. 我所做的事情都是为你的好。

Everything I do is for your own good.

我所做的事情都是为你好。"为你好" 完整的意思是"为了让你更好",for make you be better.这里的"好"是一种状态。

你的好,你的是定语,那这个好就是和你,也就是和人有关的好,这个好就是形容人的。意思是"nice, kind".

2. 我所发表的文章跟人群很受欢迎

The article I wrote was very popular with the people.

我所发表的文章(在人们当中)很受欢迎。 The part of parentheses can be omitted.

这里的"people"是泛指,所以要对应中文的泛指代词"人们"。

"跟" means "and",把"文章"和"人们"作为并列的主语。这样这句话的意思就变成了“你发表了文章,也发表了人群,文章和人群都受到了欢迎。”这在逻辑上是错误的,也没有体现出英文的意思。

I have never met a person like you.

  I (我) have never (从没有) met (遇见过) a person (人) like (像) you (你).
