@ Fearchar I MacIllFhinnein

I was able to watch "Secret" on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wXdCUrJWVQ

It is a good movie but will not make my list.

I have been thinking about "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Red Cliff".  This are good but disappointing big money movies that many people love and I like many parts of these movies myself.  So I would put them at the bottom of a top 50 list with the other big money disappoinments "The Curse of the Golden Flower" and "Seedig Bale" which are in the same category ( to me at least but many people may have these 4 movies as their first 4 movies on a top 10 list including one of my nieces who took Mandarin Chinese as a multi-year elective in college and loves all 4 of these movies ).

“After Seperation” was a good movie to the “miserable” middle class Chinese that live in the city with high education and a pathetic income, like I was. :-)  (It was typical at that time but things had changed since then.) The story was set in the background of the craze for going abroad near the end of 80's. A city movie with subtle feelings and classic lines.

Ge You was awarded as the best actor by Bai Hua Award (one of the two top film awards in China ) for his performance in that movie. The director of that movie is also very famous now. But again, it's a kind of movie that only caters maybe a small portion of the huge Chinese population.

Big movie projects based on well-known Chinese historical stories is the current trend since the story brands itself and cater a broader audience nationally or even internationally. A movie like After Seperation is risky since it might not entertain the majority of Chinese audience.

I usually watch "big movies" with a grain of salt, but "鸦片战争 The Opium War" (1997) was an exception. I totally forgot where I was in when the movie ended, which was quite unusual. I'll definitely vote for this one!

The list is a very good list, I've bookmarked it for future use. Thanks!

I have never seen 大撒把 After Separation (Da saba), Xia Gang, 1992 so I can not judge.  I never even heard of it before.  ( This is one reason I made the list because I need guidance into what I should be watching next since many Chinese movies I have never seen or even heard of). A UCSD Chinese Cinema Web-based Learning Center List that ends in about 2002 has it as a must see Chinese movie.  I have seen maybe 10% of the films on this list:

   http://chinesecinema.ucsd.edu/recommend_film_ccwlc.html

“Farewell My Concubine”, "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman", and “The Curse of the Golden Flower" are in my top fifty.

I have not seen 甲方乙方 Jiafang yifang  The Dream Factory (1997).  I notice it has a 7.2 IMDB number.

If it’s my list, I would move “To live” to the top. “Zhou Yu’s Train” drops out of the top 100.

I would definitely add <大撒把> to my top twenty. It’s not a movie with million dollar’s pictures, but it’s a good movie for sure.

“Farewell My Concubine”, "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman", “The Curse of the Golden Flower" should both be in my top twenty.

<甲方乙方> was a successful comedy and was recommended by my friends, though I hadn’t got a chance to watch it. However, Ge You’s movie is usually good. Put it here as a suggestion.

Your top 1 is on my "to watch list". Can't comment now. But I know the base story line is from the famous history story <鸿门宴> that I learned in high school.
