"As a full-time student, I've been held to 10 characters a day, as a part-time, perhaps about 20-30 a week. But it very much depends on where you are. As you progress, it becomes easier because you start recognizing common elements."

Thanks for the tips on typing chinese.  I had used http://www.pinyinjoe.com/ to set mine up.
