"The Search for Modern China by Jonathan Spence, is a very good and very thorough history of the period from around that fall of the Ming Dyansty up until the 1990's.  It is quite long and involved, but a great history book."

Short Bio - what's your story? What languages do you speak & why Chinese?
I have a degree in Computer Science and lately have been getting very involved in the Open Learning movement (you can read more on my site). I currently only know English and would love to learn a second language. It will be an excellent challenge: a way for me to exercise my brain and learn to see things from different perspectives, as well as gain access to a lot of resources that I otherwise may never have discovered.
