Here are some books I'm using.

Learning Chinese the Easy Way by Sam Song.

This first one is a great beginner's book for learning Chinese characters. It uses stories & pictures, mostly in English.

The second is for someone who has a little experience with Mandarin and it is designed for self-study. The content can be a bit dry at times but the structure is good. Focuses on pinyin and conversations.

Oxford's Beginner Chinese Dictionary

I have not personally used this but it has two qualities I appreciate - it's cheap and highly rated on Amazon. I have just been using the iphone dictionary application below and have not purchased a print dictionary. However if you're in need of one, I would suggest checking this chinese-english dictionary out.

Here is my favorite iphone chinese mandarin dictionary application.
DianHua Dictionary

It takes a while to build up your own personal vocabulary lists but after you do, it's outstanding. You can search the dictionary in english, pinyin, traditional or modern characters and I can find what I need 99% of the time. Flashcard studying application has many great options for what shows on front & back. Highly, highly recommended.
